Abstract :

“How an organism knows that it is time to undergo Juvenile to Adult Developmental transition (JDT)” is still an open question. Scientists have focused on understanding the mechanism controlling the onset of JDT in insects due to its impact on pest populations dynamic, affecting agriculture. After two decades of extensive studies linking larval metabolic statements with maturation timing in various insects, it is evident that the timing mechanism goes beyond metabolism. Indeed, several correlations between environmental signals and advanced/delayed JDT also support the existence of a plethora of non-metabolic environmental cues timing JDT. In the DEB lab, we use the fly Drosophila model, which has a conserved neuroendocrine system timing JDT and an extensive genetic toolbox to (i) defined the neuroendocrine circuitry timing JDT, (ii) examine the relationship between the sensory and the neuroendocrine systems, and (iii) determine associated JDT behaviors, which might change our agricultural control practices. In this talk, we will discuss these three main approaches.
